Expert guest Dr Claire Hughes-Lynch talks to Clare about parenting children with autism spectrum condition (ASC), focusing on abilities, not disabilities.
Dr Claire Hughes is Professor of Twice-Exceptional and Gifted Education at Cleveland State University. Previously, she was Professor of Elementary and Special Education at the College of Coastal Georgia, and Faculty Director of the Special Needs and Inclusion program at Canterbury Christ Church University in England, as well as a Fulbright Scholar to Greece.
She has served on boards in the National Association for Gifted Children, The Association for the Gifted (CEC-TAG) and Teacher Education Divisions (CEC-TED) of the Council for Exceptional Children. She is the author of numerous books, with a focus on particularly gifted children with autism, and international education.
We asked Claire what book she recommends, and she said, "Mine of course!" Claire’s book is called A Parents’ Guide to Bright Children with Autism.
The three top tips Claire shares with us in the episode are:
- Celebrate the talents. Welcome who they are and then help them be the best that they can be.
- Find a community. Talk with other parents who are going through it too. Whether it’s through the school or the National Autistic Society.
- Find a teacher. Someone who believes in your child.
